Join us to sing Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater in Didsbury in June. With a performance on the evening of Saturday June 8th followed by refreshments and time to socialise with your friends in the audience, this is a rare chance to learn and perform the splendid work from the composer of The Armed Man.
Stabat Mater is a 13th Century poem attributed to the Catholic poet Jacopone da Todi. The title is an abbreviation of the first line Stabat Mater dolorosa (The sorrowful mother was standing) and is a reflection and meditation of the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she stands at the foot of the cross during his crucifixion. It has been set to music by many composers, including Vivaldi, Rossini, Pergolesi and Poulenc, in a variety of different styles. Jenkins works in a variety of different styles from around the world to bring a light and fresh touch to the work, with influences from Jazz, Folk and middle-Eastern music as well as the western classical tradition.
As well as the original Latin text, Jenkins brings in new texts from other sources, and includes words in Latin, English, Greek, and Aramaic (the common language of the Holy Land at the time of Christ).
