At espressivo chorus we are proud to use highly qualified, talented and experienced professional musicians for our rehearsals and concerts.
Richard Quarmby – Musical Director
Richard was born and brought up in the Lake District, and moved to Huddersfield to study music.
After graduation and teacher training he moved to Oxford to take up a post as chapel organist and teacher of music at St Edward’s School. However, the pull of the north was too strong, and he returned to Huddersfield, working in education in the classroom and as a peripatetic keyboard and singing teacher.

Outside the classroom, Richard has always had an extensive involvement in music. While at university he held organ scholarships at Huddersfield and the Leeds Parish Churches, and has subsequently been Director of Music at various churches, a post he currently holds at Huddersfield Parish Church. Work with other choirs has included work with Sing Live and Unlimited Voices, which presented some outstanding opportunities to conduct and play in world leading venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, The Vatican, as well as concert halls and cathedrals across the UK and Europe. Recent work has included leading a tour to Northern Ireland, and directing a weekend of singing in the twin cathedrals in Liverpool.
At home Richard lives with his wife Verity, co-director of Espressivo and their three rapidly growing boys as well as a menagerie of animals.
Roly Mander – Vocal Coach, Stage Manager and CD recordings
Roly Mander studied piano performance at the University of Huddersfield, where he graduated with first class honours. He began learning to play the piano at a young age, but has also been singing with choirs for as long as he can remember, and having regularly accompanied choirs as a student, began directing them soon after graduating. He now works as a freelance choral director and workshop leader and in 2016 was awarded a Sing for Pleasure young conductor’s scholarship. Besides directing a number of his own choirs, he is vocal coach for Espressivo’s Manchester group, and can usually be found at the Liverpool and Birmingham concerts too, where he attempts to keep everything running smoothly, and tries to ensure that all the singers have smiles on their faces, whilst occasionally doing lighting and sound. He also records and produces the rehearsal CDs for the singers, an enjoyable job, but they don’t seem to have earned him any Brit awards so far! He lives in Huddersfield, with his partner Hannah, who keeps him organised and supplied with excellent cake.
